James在RI 阿奇.可藍夫表彰會上之演講稿

11月初我有機會跟隨扶輪前輩們參加美國扶輪行, 也才有機會親見James在RI 總部以英語演講. 深感與有榮焉. 回國之後經過一個月的沉澱, 愈發感覺到他的不同凡響. 雖然演講稿是女兒幫他翻譯, 但以他近七十的高齡, 仍勇於站在講台前,面對從那麼多國家扶輪精英所選派的RI理事們,及各個扶輪精英前輩, 仍不畏以不靈光的語言說出口, 由不得我不佩服,更讓我以他為榮. 換成是我, 一定還沒走到講台就雙腿發軟不支倒地了. 為他可嘉的勇氣, 特將他的演講稿登錄, 以免遺忘並可一日三讀.

It is a great pleasure for me to be here today. I am extremely honored to be accepted as a member of Arch Klumph Society.

I joined Rotary 13 years ago. In the beginning it was simply a way for me to meet more professionals in other fields, and to be associated with a respected organization. But in the time that followed, it became much more than that. From my fellow Rotarians, I have learned to be more service-oriented and compassionate. Over the years we have become a very close-knit family and together we have achieved so much to help improve our country, Taiwan.

Despite its economical success in recent years, Taiwan nevertheless has many areas that require continued attention and assistance. Taiwan still has a large number of people that belong to one of several disadvantaged groups; examples include new immigrants from Southeast Asia, local aboriginals and residents of rural areas. Through the efforts of our Rotary club, we have helped to improve the quality of life for many people, and through community service I now have a better understanding of the difficulties that Taiwan people face today. Many of Taiwan's social problems can be solved domestically, but many more require the help of international community. This has traditiobnally been difficult due to Taiwan's political isolation. I only hope that one day Taiwan can be treated as a member of the world community of nations, just as I personally am treated as a full member of this honored international organization.

I would like to express my gratitude to all of you. Thank you Rotary for giving me a forum to help my fellow citizens. Thank you Rotary for giving me the opportunity to meet many people of like minds. And most of all, thank you Rotary for striving to make the world a better place. For all of these reasons, I am proud to be part of Rotary International.
